Duncan Kaloi has been announced as a Silver winner of SportPesa’s Tujiamini Community Initiative in the South Rift region, receiving KES 100,000 to advance the work of Maasai Duka, a fair-trade social enterprise supporting artisans in villages and informal settlements in South Rift Kenya.

For Duncan Kaloi, empowerment is rooted in dignity, opportunity, and access to fair markets.

Maasai Duka was established in response to the challenges faced by artisans who struggle daily to provide for their families while remaining socially and economically excluded. Many of these communities have experienced conflict, displacement, and long-standing inequality, often bearing emotional and physical scars. With limited access to markets and economic opportunities, their skills frequently go undervalued.

Through Maasai Duka, Duncan is working to bridge this gap by creating sustainable income opportunities and connecting artisans to ethical and fair marketplaces. Currently, the enterprise works with 417 women artisans involved in the production of handcrafted goods that help support basic needs such as shelter, food, healthcare, and education.

"Our goal is to create pathways out of survival mode," Duncan says. "When artisans can earn a fair income from their skills, it changes not jut individual lives, but entire communities."

With the support of SportPesa’s Tujiamini programme, Maasai Duka is now taking a significant step forward with the launch of a luxury line of shirts. The KES 100,000 Silver Award will support both production and marketing, enabling the enterprise to expand its reach and increase demand for artisan-made products.

"This support allows us to invest in quality, visibility, and growth," Duncan adds. "It gives our artisans a real chance to compete in broader markets while staying true to our values of fairness and sustainability."

SportPesa’s Tujiamini initiative continues to champion changemakers who are delivering practical, community-driven solutions. By supporting ventures like Maasai Duka, Tujiamini helps transform local ideas into scalable impact.
