Aloyce Ben Magak has been announced as a Silver winner of SportPesa’s Tujiamini Community Initiative, receiving KES 100,000 to uplift and strengthen girls’ hockey at Enaiposha Girls High School in Naivasha, South Rift Region.

For Aloyce, sport is more than competition — it is a pathway to confidence, discipline, and opportunity.

A certified teacher and Level One Hockey Coach, Aloyce introduced girls’ hockey at Enaiposha Girls High School earlier this year, starting with just six wooden sticks and one ball during a Physical Education lesson. What began as curiosity quickly grew into a structured programme engaging students aged U15 to U19, many from underprivileged backgrounds in Narok, Maai Mahiu, and Naivasha.

Despite limited resources and the high cost of hockey equipment, the team pushed forward, borrowing what they could and relying on commitment and teamwork. Their determination paid off when the team made its first-ever appearance at the KSSSA Championships, reaching the county semi-finals against long-established, well-funded schools.

This milestone marked a turning point.

“Before hockey, the girls had never progressed beyond zonal levels in any sport,” Aloyce says. “Reaching the county stage changed their self-belief. It showed them what is possible.”

Recognition from the County Sports Committee as one of the most promising teams of the year helped shift community perceptions. Parents became increasingly supportive, encouraging their daughters to attend training camps and balance academics with sport.

Winning the KES 100,000 Tujiamini Silver Award further strengthened this journey. Aloyce used the funds to purchase new, standard hockey equipment, improving training quality, safety, and performance as the team sets its sights on regional competition.

“This support has brought confidence and opened doors to new possibilities,” he says. “It has accelerated a journey that would have otherwise taken much longer.”

Beyond the financial support, Tujiamini has had a deeper personal meaning for Aloyce.

“Tujiamini means resilience, a chance and a dream,” he reflects.

Looking ahead, Aloyce hopes to build partnerships that will help sustain and grow the programme — from improved equipment and branded kits to broader exposure for the team — while continuing to inspire girls to pursue both academics and sport.

SportPesa’s Tujiamini initiative continues to champion individuals who are creating meaningful impact in their communities. Through resilience, opportunity, and belief, Aloyce Ben Magak’s journey reflects the true spirit of Tujiamini.
