Homabay, Kenya – October 27, 2025

Alongside the fierce football battles during the Nyanza leg of the Tujiamini Cheza Dimba powered by SportPesa tournament, the spotlight also turned to community heroes at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay. The event marked the official unveiling of the Nyanza Tujiamini Community Award winners, celebrating individuals and groups driving positive change at the grassroots level.

Under SportPesa’s Tujiamini programme, which recognises and rewards impact-driven initiatives across Kenya, this year’s Nyanza honourees represented diverse fields including sports, media, and social impact work.

The Gold Winner title went to Jacob Omulo of Nyorwa CBO (Homa Bay), who received KES 1,000,000 for his work empowering persons with disabilities and widowed women through agribusiness and livelihood support programmes.

The Silver Winners each received KES 100,000 for their contributions to regional growth and community development:

  • Joash Ochieng, Girwa Radio 99.5 FM – for leading a regional sports campaign that amplifies local athlete voices through storytelling and dialogue.

  • Joseph Okal, National Triathlete – a Kisumu-born Commonwealth and All Africa Games athlete who advocates for sports excellence and athlete welfare as a commissioner with the National Olympic Committee.

  • John Apollo, Founder, Nyanza Badminton Open Tournament – for nurturing over 200 players annually and building a pipeline for national and international badminton talent.

In addition, 50 Bronze Award recipients were recognised with “Kwa Ground” Bronze Awards and KES 10,000 each for their everyday acts of leadership and service within their communities.

The day was not only about recognising excellence but also promoting community well-being. In commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the event featured a mobile clinic conducting free breast and cervical cancer screening stations, where women from the surrounding communities received education on prevention, early detection, and available treatment pathways. The health drive created a safe and informative space for women to learn about regular screening and adopt proactive health habits.

The celebration was elevated by an electrifying live performance from Musa Jakadalla, who took centre stage during halftime and again at the close of the event. His energetic set, featuring fan favourites that blend Luo rhythms with contemporary beats, kept the crowd on its feet and underscored the unity of sport, culture, and community that defines Tujiamini Cheza Dimba.

Speaking at the event, Japhet Akhulia, Head of Partnerships and Sponsorships at SportPesa, emphasised the broader vision of the Tujiamini initiative:

“Tujiamini is more than a platform. It is a movement that nurtures belief and rewards potential. From sports to community initiatives, it stands as an incubator for talent and growth. Each leg has shown us that when people believe in themselves, greatness follows.”

The awards segment added a meaningful dimension to the Nyanza leg of Cheza Dimba, connecting football, empowerment, and community impact. As the Tujiamini caravan heads next to Bomet on November 15, 2025, it continues to recognise not only athletes but also changemakers who embody the spirit of belief and progress.
